Choosing the best heating appliances to use to supplement the central heating in a house should be done after doing some research into the most efficient heaters on the market. Some older houses have electric fires which radiate heat into the room but cost a lot to run.          Others may have coal effect fires that have a fan heater in them which blows warm air into the room. Neither of these two heating appliances are a very efficient way to heat a room and cost a huge amount to run.

Oil filled radiators are another popular choice for heating a room and although better than an electric fire they still use a lot of electricity. Usually, they are fitted with a thermostatic control so the temperature of the room can be set, and the appliance will turn on and off as it needs to, keeping the room at the desired temperature.

A good choice of heating appliance to either supplement the central heating or warm up the people in the room is an infrared fire. These appliances are small and portable so can easily be moved from room to room. They can be set to use less than half a kilowatt of power on the lowest setting and only just over a kilowatt on the highest setting meaning they are cheap to run.

With so many different types of coffee makers on the Market it can be hard to know what the differences in them are and which coffee appliance would best suit you.

Here are the main types of coffee makers currently on the market:-

Cafetières – this is probably the most inexpensive way to make fresh coffee, the ground coffee is put in a glass jug with boiling water and the lid is then plunged down to allow the coffee to be poured out leaving the coffee grounds behind. This is quick and easy but quite messy when you have to wash it out.

Percolator- this is a machine where you add coffee grounds to a section in the top and the machine then boils the water and slowly passes it through the grounds to collect in a jug below. These are great for numerous cups through the day as the coffee jug sits on a warming plate keeping the coffee hot for hours.

Coffee pod machine – there are a number of these types of machines on the market at the moment and they tend to be popular as they are very easy and convenient to use. The machine boils water and then passes it through your chosen coffee pod. You can buy a whole range of flavoured coffees as well as hot chocolates and even ice coffee blends. The pod can be quite expensive though so its worth factoring that in before you make a purchase.

Bean to cup coffee machines – these work out much cheaper per cup of coffee however the machines themselves tend to be quite expensive as they are much more sophisticated. You add coffee beans to the top of the machine and it selects and grinds out the correct amount of coffee, boiling the water to make the perfect amount for your cup. You can then use the attached milk frother to create barista style coffees such as a latte or cappuccino.  

It’s really a case of personal preference but certainly do some research and check out reviews before you buy to avoid getting the wrong product.

In days gone by a sewing machine would have been a common sight in many homes as people often made their own clothes and repaired and altered clothes for the family. Some people even made a living out of this and so their sewing machine was a vital piece of equipment. Now people who own a sewing machine has reduced dramatically and unless you are interested in sewing and dressmaking it is unlikely that you will use one regularly. As a good sewing machine is not cheap to buy new it is worth paying to have one that you own or a second hand one serviced as it will save a lot of frustration.

Ongoing care and maintenance will simply consist of cleaning it to remove any build up of fabric fibres in the mechanism and oiling of some moving parts. The instruction manual will show where these points are. The manuals for older models can usually be accessed online.

As silly as it sounds there are some appliances that are used infrequently during the summer months and spend their time in the back of a kitchen cupboard but as soon as the weather gets colder our thoughts turn to stews, soups and toasted sandwiches and the appliances that are used to make these heart-warming foods.

A slow cooker is often used to make stews and curries and is ideal if you are out at work during the day and want a warm meal to come home to. The ingredients are simply placed in the slow cooker in the morning, if the slow cooker has a timer function the timer is set and then it can be left to cook the meal. Slow cookers are very versatile and can be used to cook a wide variety of savoury and sweet dishes.

Soup makers were very popular a few years ago and if you enjoy home made soup then it is worthwhile investing in one. All the ingredients for your delicious soup are put into the soup maker and the appliance cooks and liquidises the soup for you. All you need is the crusty bread to go with it.

Many people enjoy a sandwich for lunch but on a cold day a hot toasted sandwich is much better, so a sandwich toaster is invaluable. Experiment with fillings for your toastie as there are many delicious variations to enjoy.

Home air purifiers are becoming more popular, partly as a response to concerns over air quality and virus transmission when indoors. While our homes are often designed to keep us warm, many of us are spending much more time indoors and so are becoming exposed to more indoor particles and pollutants that can induce or aggravate breathing issues. Air purifiers are a reliable solution to get rid of indoor pollutants and are certainly worth adding to your home.

Air purifiers essentially work by cleaning the air, which may include pollutants, allergens, and toxins. Unlike essential oil diffusers and humidifiers, which add particles to indoor air, an air purifier not only removes particles but cleans the air too.

The effectiveness of air purifiers has been questioned but it has been shown that they are effective at removing allergens which is of particular benefit to those with allergies to dust mites, pollen, and pet dander.

Like allergens, indoor mould particles can become especially dangerous for people with asthma and other lung conditions. Air purifiers may work to some degree, but filtration is far more effective in getting rid of mould in the air.
