Household mould warning – Today Tonight

Mould isn’t just ugly to have a look at, it poses a major health risk.

As summer takes hold and humidity rises, mould spores spread rapidly and it doesn’t take long for the difficulty to get uncontrolled.

Birgit Stewart has rented her Sydney home for the past ten years and two years ago her health began to rapidly deteriorate.

She says it was from the infestation of mould growing contained in the home.

“i am getting chronic lung pains. They put me on Metatrexalate about six weeks ago. I had another episode where my toe went numb. i’ve been having respiratory problems for years,” Birgit said.

“One can find it’s only black toxic mould creeping closer and closer into the center of the room.

All these marks listed here are more likely to be caused from mould and as you’ll find it’s all over where.”

Frustrated, sick and without a help from her real estate agent, Birgit contracted an external mould and environmental scientist to assess the valuables. The effects revealed the home is categorised as a degree four contamination.

Level one refers to an average or good environment while level four indicates the top amount of contamination.

At that level, 25 square metres of a house are colonised with mould.

Dr Heiki Neumeister-Kemp is from mould-testing laboratory Mycoloiga. She says mould becomes hazardous when the small spores which are released into the air are inhaled. They are able to latch directly to the lung making breathing difficult and painful.

“We discover mould in houses once we have a kind or shape of moisture. It could be so simple as condensation, otherwise you let your bath tub overflow,” Dr Neumeister-Kemp said.

Claire and Alistair Fremantle are tenants who also lost their home and possessions to mould.

“We didn’t notice it was there until i used to be cleaning for our six-week house inspection. I cleaned many of the mould off and that i showed it to the agent, and from there it just got worse and worse and worse,” Claire said.

“We’re living out of a suitcase, we have now our two young kids and now we have about a items of clothing between us and some toiletry items, that’s all we were in a position to take with us.”

After their children began to be afflicted by bronchitis, testing revealed that 40 per cent in their bedroom was covered in mould, including their pillowcases.

“I remember touching their blankets and they might be damp through the night since the humidity was so high, in order that they were inhaling that moist, mouldy air all night long for weeks until I realised,’ Claire said.

Don Jones the acting commissioner of NSW Fair Trading says tenants can complain in the event that they feel they’re being hardly done by.

“Tenants should expect to have the valuables they’re renting inside the standard that they first walked in the course of the door,” Mr Jones said.

“In the event you do not believe you’re getting anywhere along with your landlord you have to consult the buyer affairs agency and spot what we will be able to do for you , there are tenancy advisory services in most states,” Mr Jones said.

Claire and her family managed get out in their 12-month lease and Birgit plans to take the actual Estate Agent to the tribunal.
