Demonstrations over household tax – Yahoo!

Demonstrators have taken to the streets around the country to protest concerning the government‘s controversial household tax.

Council offices and TD constituency clinics were the scene of a chain of events in Dublin while others were staged in towns and cities nationwide.

Organisers said several thousand people took part within the capital with another thousand in Wexford, 800 in Cork, 400 in Limerick, 300 in Galway, 300 in Carlow, 200 in Kilkenny and 200 in Wicklow.

The government hopes to boost 160 million euro with the hot 100 euro charge on households.

Official information leaflets in regards to the austerity measure were symbolically binned at most of the demonstrations.

Protest group the Campaign Against Household and Water Taxes (CAHWT) claimed the day have been a good success.

“The CAHWT will announce further events and protests in a campaign now gaining huge popular support,” said a spokeswoman.

The government has said anyone encouraging people to not pay the charge was acting irresponsibly.
